Patients Stopping Slimming Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets
New research indicates that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People purchasing such treatments should be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
People who have stopped the jabs describe a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural changes.
